Where there’s a hit there’s a writ: Plagiarism in electronic music

Hip-hop was largely built on stealing music from others. But in electronic music, it’s a slightly different story. RA’s Richard Brophy takes a look at some of the issues involved with sampling, stealing and much more.

“Where there’s a hit there’s a writ” the old music industry maxim goes, suggesting that behind every chart-topping release, there’s a back-story fuelled by deceit, fraud and subterfuge. The same goes for electronic music, it seems. Tales of pioneering Chicago and Detroit artists getting shafted by labels and promoters have, regrettably, entered into electronic music lore, with Larry Heard reputed to have only received 250 dollars for writing and producing the classic “Can You Feel It?” But while there are countless other stories about the “business” end of the industry ripping off wide-eyed talent, in the past year, there has been plenty of talk about the creative sphere as well. Artists ripping off their contemporaries, and releasing music under their own name that isn’t theirs. Surely not, right?
